Good things crumb to those who wait. That’s especially true for Badgers who have long sought the original Guerrilla Cookie, a popular protest provision on campus during the antiwar years. When its eccentric baker, Ted Odell ’64, stopped making the treats around 1991, zealous fans tried for years to re-create the recipe, which Odell kept a closely guarded secret. Most assumed he had taken it to his grave when he died in 2021. Instead, he was apparently hoping to see the recipe fulfill a longtime dream of raising profits for worthy causes. He found the right partner when he passed it on to the nonprofit Three Waters Event Center and Nature Reserve in Brodhead, Wisconsin. The center hosts events such as retreats and wedding receptions to support conservation efforts — a cause close to Odell’s heart. The reserve’s chefs re-created the cookies and began selling them this past spring. Inspired by the Guerrilla Cookie, Three Waters is also developing what it calls the Climate Cookie. The new version will use flour made from native grass seeds, taking Odell’s environmental ethos to the next level. A national chain will stock it, and a portion of sales will generate royalties for conservation. Right on, Ted. Rest in peace.
