Julie Karg was named the 2015 Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Woman of the Year for Orange County/Inland Empire. Julie raised more than $80,000 in ten weeks in the spirited, prestigious, and national LLS Man & Woman of the Year Campaign. With a team of family and friends, Julie created the JOURNEY campaign to honor her brother, Steve (UW BS 2004, MS 2006 and MIT MArch 2010), who is a 10-year Hodgkin’s Lymphoma survivor. Julie and her team hosted 5 fundraising events in California and a silent auction event in Wisconsin. In addition, the team had online auctions, made themed silent auction baskets for the Grand Finale Gala and collected hundreds of monetary and in-kind donations. For her fundraising efforts, JOURNEY campaign’s grand total has been linked to an LLS research portfolio in Steve’s name, supporting Hodgkin’s Lymphoma research. This portfolio includes 6 research projects underway at multiple prestigious institutions. Additionally, the portfolio will support a doctor at the University of Wisconsin, who is studying the basic mechanisms of leukemia.
Julie has been fundraising for LLS since 2004 and has been participating in the LLS Light the Night Walks in Orange County for the past 12 years, raising funds and awareness for blood cancers. Since 2004, Team “Walk This Way for Steve” has raised over $29,000 towards cancer research.
Julie is an active member of the UW Alumni Chapter of Orange County, where she participates in chapter events, attends Badger football game viewings, and supports the Orange County student scholarship recipients attending UW. She has previously been on the Board of Directors, and served as the chapter Vice President and Chairperson of the Young Alumni Committee.
