Join us for our annual Founders’ Day celebration, featuring Jerry Clark, a crops and soils educator, who will share his work to help farmers grow better crops for the craft brewing industry. The evening will feature a silent auction to benefit the San Diego Chapter’s scholarship fund. Heavy appetizers, drinks, and lots of local Badger community spirit will also be offered!
The cost is $60 per person, $50 for alumni within five years of graduation, or $40 for alumni within one year of graduation.

Malting Barley Research for the Craft Brewing Industry
Barley is a cornerstone of craft brewing. It has been grown and used as malt in beverages for more than 6,000 years. Although the malt process is the same as it has been since its early origins, newer technologies and improved barley varieties bred for the malt industry have changed the brewing landscape. Jerry Clark will discuss results of on-farm barley research and the management needed to grow high-quality malting barley to meet the criteria for the craft brewing industry and beer drinkers everywhere.

Speaker
Jerry Clark is a professor with the UW Division of Extension and serves as the crops and soils agent for Chippewa, Dunn, and Eau Claire Counties. Clark’s on-farm research program includes small grains, hops, forages, and soil fertility. Investigating the performance of winter and spring barley varieties in western Wisconsin is a focus of his current research. Clark’s research aims to provide farmers with unbiased, research-based information to make sound field crop production decisions. Clark was awarded the UW–Madison Van Hise Distinguished Outreach Teaching Award in 2024 and was recently recognized as the 2025 Certified Crop Adviser of the Year by the Wisconsin Certified Crop Adviser Board. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agriculture education from the University of Wisconsin–River Falls.
