Advocate for the UW

As a public university, UW–Madison is affected by the decisions of our state and federal governments. We need alumni and friends like you to speak up about issues that affect our students and faculty and the critical work they do for the world. Find out how you can support the UW below.

Wisconsin State Budget

The biennial state budget determines a significant portion of the university’s funding for the next two years, affecting every corner of the UW. Learn more about what this budget entails and how it will affect UW–Madison.

Take Action

Tell Congress to Resume Federal Grantmaking

Last year, advocates across the nation reached out to members of Congress in support of federal research funding. Significant cuts to research funds that save lives, drive our economy, and strengthen our national defense, were proposed in the FY26 federal budget. Congress heard the message and passed a budget without draconian cuts to research.

Typically, once Congress approves the federal budget, agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Energy’s Office of Science move relatively quickly to release funding opportunities, award new grants, and renew existing grants and contracts.

This year, however, instead of releasing research dollars to labs and scientists who can quickly put the funds toward making groundbreaking discoveries and lifesaving medical advances, the agencies are dragging their feet.

Learn more about the delay, and then ask your members of Congress to take action in support of funding that has already been approved.
