No. But it is on the internet! WLHA (named for the Lakeshore Halls Association), began back in 1952. Lakeshore residents tuned in not through airwaves but through dorm power lines. The unsanctioned station operated at minimal power levels to stay under the radar of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), but it was popular throughout the 1960s and 1970s. As FM became the dial of choice, the AM-based WLHA saw its audience fade like the station’s poor reception. In 1984, WLHA illegally hopped onto 94.1 FM, then later 91.5 FM. Following a second wind of support in the early ’90s, the students at WLHA became a little too confident and amped up the power to reach a bigger audience. Unfortunately, this larger listenership also included an FCC snitch, and the rogue radio station was forced to shut in 1993. Nearly a decade later, WLHA’s descendant and the UW’s first licensed student radio station, WSUM 91.7 FM, aired “Welcome to WSUM” at 2:22 p.m. on February 22, 2002. (The host of this first episode, Evan Cohen ’02, is still on the air today for ESPN.) In 2018, alumni of WLHA reconstituted as a commercial internet radio station, which plays the same ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s music that Lakeshore residents heard back in the day.
